Denver, known as the "Mile High City," because it sits exactly one mile above sea level, is both the capital and largest city in Colorado. Its sleek skyline blends modern and urban architecture with the breathtaking Rocky Mountains as a stunning backdrop.
The city is home to a diverse and rapidly growing business ecosystem, with industries ranging from technology and energy to aerospace, healthcare, and finance. This thriving landscape makes Denver a top destination for corporate travel, drawing professionals from all over the world. With the Colorado Convention Center capable of hosting up to 50,000 people daily and more than 100 hotels citywide—including luxury brands like Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, and Kimpton, as well as authentic, historic options like The Oxford (the city’s oldest hotel) and The Crawford (inside Union Station)—Denver’s accommodation scene is as varied as the city itself.

Even if you only have a few hours to spare, there are plenty of iconic spots in the city that will make your time here unforgettable.
I may be biased—one of my best friends has called this city home for years—but I truly believe Denver is one of the coolest places to live. It’s a city where open-minded, laid-back vibes effortlessly blend with the beauty of nature and the buzz of urban life, offering the best of both worlds. Whether you're into outdoor adventures, vibrant arts scenes, or simply hanging out with your pet at one of the many pet-friendly spots, Denver is all about embracing diversity, creativity, and fun. So, let’s dive in!
Union Station
This vibrant, historic landmark its right in the heart of the city and has served as a major transportation hub since its first opening in 1881. Sadly, less than a decade later the station was destroyed by a fire caused due to an electrical issue. It was rebuilt in Beaux-Arts style and reopened its doors in 1914.
From 2001 to 2014 the station underwent through a $54 million revitalization, which is what makes it such a charming and lively spots today. Union Station is now a bustling destination and it connects Denver International Airport directly to the city —the train ride is about 30 minutes and runs every 15-30 minutes, with a one-way fare of approximately $10.50 USD which is convenient if you are traveling light.
Upon arrival, you will find shopping, cafes, bars and an elegant lounge area where you can relax, enjoy a coffee, or even work a little.
The station houses The Crawford Hotel a vintage-inspired property with 112 rooms on the upper floors of the station. Starting nightly guest room rates range from $300 to $400 USD. The hotels restaurant, The Mercantile —which has been featured in the Michelin guide— is located in the ground floor. Guests can also delight in the Terminal Bar right next to the hotel, and access fitness facilities at The Oxford hotel, just a short walk from the station.
Union Station is a place full of history and stunning design. It’s the perfect way to kick off your Denver adventures, and honestly, you will want to sleep at a train station.
A walk to 16th Street Mall
Starting off at the Denver Millennium Bridge, right next to Union Station, you’ll find a stunning piece of modern architecture. This pedestrian and cycling bridge is more than just a connection—it links some of the trendiest parts of the city, making it easy to hop from LoDo (Lower Downtown) to the up-and-coming Highlands and RiNo neighborhoods. Surrounded by parks and miles of trails, the bridge offers scenic views of the Denver skyline, the mountains, and the river. It’s the perfect spot for a stroll or bike ride with a backdrop that can’t be beaten.
A quick 10-minute walk south brings you to the 16th Street Mall, a whole street lined with international stores, trendy cafes, and street performers. The outdoor mall features everything from high-end shops to quirky boutiques, so it’s an ideal place to explore if you're in the mood for shopping. The vibe shifts here, with a more energetic urban buzz as you step into the heart of downtown. Nearby, you’ll find iconic hotels like Four Seasons, The Thompson, and the Hyatt Regency—the latter being one of the most famous due to its close proximity to the Colorado Convention Center.
Along this walk, you'll also discover two charming spots worth stopping by:
Larimer Square dates back to the 19th century and was one of Denver’s first commercial areas. Located just a few blocks before the 16th Street Mall, this charming square is home to some of the oldest buildings in the city, showcasing beautifully preserved Victorian-era architecture that adds plenty of character to the block. With its cobblestone streets and original storefronts, walking through the square feels like stepping back in time. Today, the area is designated as a National Historic District, making it an essential stop for history, architecture and culture lovers. The square is also very active, regularly hosting events, festivals, and pop-up happenings, giving it a dynamic atmosphere.
Skyline Park is a charming urban oasis just a couple of blocks from Larimer Square—the perfect spot to relax, grab a bite, or enjoy a bit of greenery while still being in the heart of the city. Though it's not massive, the park offers plenty of open spaces and lawns where you can unwind. Framed by tall buildings, the views of the Denver skyline add to its charm, and the vibrant, lively energy of the city often spills into the park. It’s a spot for food trucks, festivals, art installations, and even ice skating in the winter, making it a year-round destination for both locals and visitors.
Right next to the park stands the Daniels & Fischer Tower, a historic gem built in 1910 as part of the Daniels & Fisher Department Store. Modeled after the famous Campanile in Venice, Italy, this clock tower was originally designed to help guide people through Denver as the city was expanding. Standing at 325 feet tall, it was once one of the tallest buildings in Denver. While the tower is no longer open to the public for viewing, it remains an iconic part of the city’s skyline and a beloved landmark in downtown Denver.
Colorado State Capitol & Civic Center Park
Nestled in the heart of Denver about 20 minutes walking from 16 St Mall, Civic Center Park is where the history and modernity come together effortlessly. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon walk or catching a lively event. With its stunning Greek-style columns, open spaces, and the iconic fountain in the center, the park exudes a peaceful charm while still being right in the middle of the city’s hustle. It’s also home to some serious civic action, hosting everything from cultural celebrations to public demonstrations.
Right at the edge of the park stands the Colorado State Capitol, an architectural gem that’s as impressive as it is symbolic. Completed in 1908, the gold-leafed dome represents Colorado’s rich gold rush history. Step inside, and you’re surrounded by murals and statues that tell the state’s story. And don’t forget about the famous 13th step—it’s where Denver hits the mile-high mark, earning its nickname as the “Mile-High City.” The building is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 5.00pm and offers free guided tours from 10.00am to 4.00pm and are on a first come, first serve basis. You can visit the dome with a guide by climbing 99 steps above the third floor.
The best part? These two iconic spots are right next to each other, making it easy to soak up both history and scenic vibes in one visit. After touring the Capitol, you can unwind in Civic Center Park. With so much culture, history, and space to relax, a trip to this corner of Denver feels like stepping into the city’s soul.
Denver Art Museum
Right next to the Civic Center Park, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) is a must-see for anyone with an appreciation for culture and creativity. Although you may need a little extra time to go through all of it, it is definitely a good idea to check out any special exhibitions showing. It is usually open 10.00am to 5.00pm and tickets cost around $30 USD for non residents.
With a stunning blend of modern architecture and a rich, diverse collection of artwork, the DAM offers something for everyone. From Native American and contemporary art to European masterpieces and photography, it’s a feast for the eyes. Every corner of the museum invites exploration and awe. It’s the kind of place where you can lose yourself for hours, constantly discovering new pieces that spark your imagination.
For art lovers and casual visitors, the Denver Art Museum offers an enriching experience. After taking in the galleries, grab a bite at Cafe Gio, where the stylish atmosphere mirrors the art-filled vibe of the museum itself. The museum also has a fabulous gift shop, so you can bring a little piece of the art world home with you.
Denver Public Library
Tucked right next to the Art Museum, the Denver Public Library is more than just a place to check out books—it’s a true architectural gem and cultural hub. With its striking red sandstone exterior and unique cylindrical tower, this library looks like something straight out of a futuristic book. Inside, it’s an oasis of calm and creativity, with cozy reading nooks, vibrant public spaces, and stunning public art.
Municipal Building
The Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building is an architectural beauty and a piece of Denver’s civic pride. Named after the city’s first African American mayor, this stately building blends neoclassical charm with sleek modern design, making it a striking landmark to pass by or explore. The exterior, with its grand granite façade, feels both timeless and impressive, while inside, you'll find elegant marble floors and thoughtful public art that reflect Denver's spirit. Out front, the iconic “Denver Faces” sculpture, with its unique asymmetrical faces, adds an artistic touch that speaks to the city’s diversity and character.
The additional building below is right in front and it was interesting to see as well, so I thought I would share, definitely giving the city an artistic perspective.
RiNo
Welcome to RiNo—Denver’s creative heart, home to vibrant street art and a buzzing arts scene. Standing for River North, this once-industrial district has transformed into one of the city’s trendiest neighborhoods, known for its eclectic mix of art galleries, craft breweries, cool coffee shops, and urban murals.
